Why is Mormonism such an anathema for other Americans?

Yesterday, CNN had a little blurb about Kyle Sampson, the ex-chief of staff for Alberto Gonzales. The first two points talked about his career as a lawyer. That's fine. It's the last bullet point that I have a problem with:

The last bullet point stated that he's a Mormon with several children.

Now, how the hell is that pertinent to the story? Who cares? If Mr. Sampson were Lutheran or Jewish, do you think that CNN would put that up there? I doubt it. What's up with being Mormon that's got everyone's panties in a bunch about it?
